Emergency Shutdown Procedure
Do you have a hot water leak or system fault? Locate your hot water unit, follow the below steps to isolate your system and call (07) 3878 4444 for affordable same-day assistance.
1) Shut off the cold-water inlet to your hot water unit. This valve will be located on the inlet feed to your hot water system. Turn this tap clockwise as it will allow. Once this is off, briefly open a hot water tap inside your home. No water should come from this tap.
2) Locate the electricity supply switch. This will usually be located at your switchboard or meter box. Turn OFF the switch labelled hot water. This may sometime be HWS or HW.

- Shut off the gas supply to your hot water heater using the gas isolation valve. Usually a yellow handle, this valve will be installed on the gas supply pipe to your hot water system. Alternatively, shutting off the gas to your property at the meter or cylinders will also do the job. Keep in mind though, this will also isolate the gas supply to gas cooktop and ovens if you have them.

Maintenance Information
Regularly maintaining your hot water unit has several benefits, including:
- Helping to prevent an unexpected breakdown.
- Detecting and preventing leaks can save money on energy and water bills.
- Increasing the life of the hot water cylinder by limiting corrosion and rust.
- Ensuring the manufacturer’s requirements are met, and any issues are identified before the warranty period finishes.
Minor Maintenance Check: Every 6 Months
It is recommended that a minor maintenance check is carried out on your hot water unit every six months. This is a simple check you can perform without needing to engage a licensed professional. For storage electric, gas and heat pump units, this involves:
- Gently lift the lever on the TPR valve (temperature pressure relief). Be careful as this water is very hot (up to 80 degrees) and under high pressure.
- Gently lift the lever on the ECV valve (expansion control valve). This is also known as the cold water expansion valve.
- If the unit is located inside, check the drain from the safe tray is not blocked and water is not pooling around the base of the tank.
Note: The TPR (temperature pressure relief valve) and ECV (expansion control valve) are designed to leak when the hot water system is heating. After flushing the valves, the water may continue to flow for up to 5 minutes.
Major Service: Every 5 Years
Major hot water manufacturers Rheem, Vulcan, Rinnai, Dux and Aqumax recommend that a Major Service be carried out on your hot water unit every five (5) years. This work should be carried out by a ‘preferred plumber’ or service agent.
Always refer to the manufacturer of your unit for maintenance instructions for your specific system.
